A trip to Brompton Cemetery

We recently went for a walk around Brompton Cemetery, as part of a challenge we set ourselves to visit all The Magnificent Cemeteries a few years ago. Unfortunately, only a small part of the cemetery is dog-friendly, a path which runs from one end to the other. This was probably the cheaper part of the cemetery, far away from The Central Avenue and The Great Circle, which runs through the centre of the cemetery.

Over 200000 people are buried in the cemetery, marked by around 35000 monuments. I wasn’t aware of any family history connections to Brompton Cemetery so was a little surprised to look down and see a name I recognised on a stone monument:

In affectionate remembering of J.W.Picton, M.D. of Iscoed, Carmarthenshire, died 19th June 1883 aged 75 years

I know that the Picton family purchased Iscoed (old) and Iscoed (modern) as an incomplete shell, as well as two other farms in 1804 for £30000 from Sir John Bell William Mansel or Sir William Mansel. I haven’t managed to work out who J.W.Picton was.

Thomas Picton and Cecil Powell had 7 children inc. Thomas Picton, later Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton MP (1758-1815).  J.W.Picton, M.D. was born in 1808 so perhaps he was a son of Thomas?
