Went to school at Ferndale Road Elementary School, Swindon. Only one of family to pass the 11+ but could not afford to pay to go to Grammar School. Appointed to the Spring Shop at Great Western Railway Works, learned to make and mend parts for locomotives. Laid off when he finished his apprenticeship at the age of 21. Lived at 146 (or 143) Ferndale Road, Swindon with his parents, brother and sister. Played in Harry Smith's orchestra/band in the 1930s (played violin, clarinet and alto saxophone). Worked at Gloucester Aircraft Company as an aircraft fitter on hurricane Fighter planes. Married on 9th September 1939. Their wedding reception was due to be held in the Church Hall but it had been requisitioned due to the outbreak of war. The reception was held at 1 Whiteman Street instead. Called up in 1944 to the Royal and Electrical Mechanical Engineers- Sergeant-Instructor, even though he was in a reserved occupation. He taught men how to drive and maintain tanks. Maintenance engineer at Swindon Technical College, Swindon,then at Vickers Supermarine factory, where he worked until he retired in 1981. |
