Celebrating VE Day in Swindon in 1945

The children wanted to learn a little more about VE Day in 1945. Of course we turned to my mum who was born during the Second World War. She remembered that school was closed that day and there was a huge street party all along their street in Swindon (Whiteman Street in Gorse Hill). I dug out some photos from 8th May 1945.

My Nan was amazing at whipping up new outfits and made a Little Bo Peep outfit for my mum.

I also found this photo of my Nan holding my Auntie, sitting between one of her sisters and her own Mother. It looks like there were a lot of sandwiches and cups of teas back in 1945.

1915 Swindon Voters list

I found this interesting record thanks to my free trial on The Genealogist website. I have very few records post the 1911 census so was excited to see Alfred Benjamin Hacker listed as the resident of 1 Whiteman’s Street, Swindon in the 1915 Swindon Voters list.

Although he died in 1935 his wife Elizabeth Hacker lived in the house until the late 1950s when she moved to a council house in Portal Road with one of her daughters and her family.

Wedding Wednesday – Winchcombe/Day 1945

This is a lovely tinted photograph of William (Bill) Winchcombe and Frances Day on their wedding day 25th August 1945. He was the younger brother of my grandfather, Robert Winchcombe.

I presume this was taken at St Barnabus Church, Swindon.

How to scan old photographs

Recently my mum has been helping her cousin identify some old photographs. I inherited lots of photographs from my maternal grandparents and luckily they went through a lot of them with me when they were still alive.

I have three new photographs to add to my collection. Unfortunately they’ve been scanned to a very small size but it’s nice to have them.

Middle row – 3rd left, Grampy Hacker, Uncle Chip just behind him, miss 3, then Uncle Cecil, Auntie Connie, Uncle Reg. This must have been taken before 1935, as Grampy and Uncle Cecil died that year from TB. The whole surviving family (4 boys, 4 girls) of the 10 children Nanny had, are on this photo.
